A few projects leading up to The Other: A Maze

Glitch Gallery™ (2018) (begins at 3:11)

Glitch Gallery™ (2018) was my first of three “VR Prototypes” I created between 2016 and 2018. It’s a simple exploration of an abstract art gallery featuring glitch art from my students. It was also re-purposed as gallery in Maze #6 of The Other: A Maze in 2020.

meditatio™ (2017; rev. 2022). This is a minimally-interactive immersive piece which is controlled by touchpad/mouse. Its soundtrack is generated by the four “characters” floating down toward the mostly “solid” roiling lake with a mosaic texture.
You can’t control much—only your position using the mouse to fly through the environment. There is no story. It does not express emotion or celebrate identity. It’s like what Ravel said about “Bolero:” “It is my masterpiece, unfortunately, it contains no music.”
So, apply that to VR.
I created meditatio in 2017, one of three VR prototypes I built during my sabbatical and subsantially revised in 2022.
—Joey Bargsten, Director/Programmer

p.s. meditatio is only playable on a Mac, it will not run on the PC. It doesn’t require a headset to view—it’s a prototype for a VR project, but this app is controlled by mouse/trackpad and viewed projected on a screen. Multiple copies of the piece installed in a space and explored by multiple “performers” is also possible. Download and unzip meditatio here.

Narrative and Spatial Design through Immersive Music and Audio (2020) is a short paper I wrote for the 2020 IEEE-SIVE conference.
